Washington, DC – SEARAC condemns the Trump Administration’s decision to eliminate the Census 2030 Advisory Committee (2030 CAC) and the Census National Advisory Committee on Racial, Ethnic, and Other Populations (NAC). The dismantling of these committees will harm Southeast Asian American (SEAA) and other communities who are historically underrepresented in federal data.
Last year, the US Census Bureau named SEARAC Executive Director Quyên Đinh as one of 23 new members appointed to the 2030 CAC. Quyen’s participation with the 2030 CAC would have provided valuable guidance and recommendations for reaching Southeast Asian Americans, who are considered “hard to count,” ahead of the 2030 Census.
Quyên Đinh responds to the elimination of CAC and NAC:
“Census data are essential to highlight the experiences of SEAAs to community-based organizations, researchers, and policymakers. These data allow us to understand the differences among our communities and the gaps in resourcing, socioeconomic disparities, and barriers to social and economic mobility. We are disappointed that community-informed practices and accurate and reliable data will not be a priority of this administration. SEARAC will continue to fight for good data that allow our stories to be seen and heard.”
