Dear community,
Nearly 60 years ago, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. stood at the podium of a New York City church and delivered a passionate speech that brought him criticism from hundreds of major newspapers across the country, then-President Lyndon Johnson, and even some of his supporters and allies in the civil rights movement.
The politically controversial topic? Condemning US militarization in Southeast Asia and calling for an end to the Vietnam War with the “fierce urgency of now.”
Dr. King goes on to warn,
“If we do not act, we shall surely be dragged down the long, dark, and shameful corridors of time reserved for those who possess power without compassion, might without morality, and strength without sight.”
His powerful call to action via his Beyond Vietnam: A Time to Break Silence speech continues to inspire SEARAC’s fight for justice and to hold those in power accountable. Today, his enduring vision for an inclusive, harmonious, and united America is more important than ever as new leadership takes office in the White House.
This year, as we commemorate 50 years since SEA families sought refuge from war, displacement, and violence, Dr. King’s vision feels particularly resonant. Since the aftermath of the war, Southeast Asian Americans have built vibrant communities in partnership and with the support of Black, Brown, and Indigenous allies who have shared in our struggles and hopes. Together, we have worked to bend the arc of history toward justice, and that work continues still.
During this dark corridor of time, we find light and strength in the memory of our ancestors and the love of our elders who acted with fierce urgency for our future.
And we will continue fighting for a brighter tomorrow where all communities, including Southeast Asian Americans, have the opportunity to thrive and pursue our dreams.
Join us,
Team SEARAC
