Week of Giving: Counter darkness by highlighting our legacy

Dear SEARAC Supporter,

In an otherwise devastating year for refugee and immigrant communities, SEARAC centered the Southeast Asian American (SEAA) experience and ensured that the spotlight shone on our 50-year legacy.

I’m so proud of our efforts to introduce a California state resolution in the CA Legislature commemorating 50 years of Southeast Asian refugee resettlement in the United States.

It was so inspiring to see a multicultural, multigenerational cohort of Southeast Asian American community members from across the state come together to celebrate this resolution. I loved watching our elders take photos with the resolution while they wore their traditional garb; for many, this was their first time at the State Capitol. It was a powerful reminder that Southeast Asian Americans belong in the halls of power, all across the country.

In passing SCR 96, we commemorated the ways that Southeast Asian Americans have indelibly shaped California – the state with the largest population of SEAAs – and called upon the Legislature to pursue comprehensive policies for all refugee communities, including in education, health and mental health, and language access.

We continue to build power with SEAAs and other refugee and immigrant communities to fight back against the unjust, discriminatory, and violent policies of the current administration. These resolutions – and our community’s 50-year legacy – are a powerful reminder that we are not going anywhere.

Join us in securing the next 50 years of the Southeast Asian American legacy. Donate to SEARAC today and help us reach our goal of raising $50,000 by the end of 2025.

Warmly,

Thuy Do
